Porcellio is one of the most rewarding genera for new keepers. Native to Europe, the Mediterranean and North Africa, these isopods are hardy, fast-breeding and forgiving — perfect as a first species or as a hard-working clean-up crew in a bioactive terrarium setup. Popular lineages include Porcellio scaber (and its many colour morphs like "Orange", "Dalmatian" and "Koi"), Porcellio laevis, Porcellio hoffmannseggi, Porcellio ornatus and Porcellio expansus.

Enclosure & ventilation
Unlike cave-dwelling Cubaris, Porcellio come from warm, comparatively dry habitats. The single most common mistake is keeping them too wet.
- Use a container with generous ventilation to keep air fresh and prevent mould.
- Keep the majority of the enclosure dry, with one damp corner to create a moisture gradient.
- Provide cork bark, hardwood and a deep bed of leaf litter for shelter and grazing.
Temperature & humidity
Porcellio do well at 20–26 °C, so typical Malaysian room temperature is fine. Keep only a portion of the substrate moist and let the rest dry out between waterings — they will move to the humidity level they prefer.
Feeding
These are enthusiastic eaters and efficient recyclers.
- Foundation: leaf litter and decaying hardwood, always available.
- Vegetables: carrot, zucchini, squash and similar, offered a few times a week.
- Protein: important for this genus — offer fish flakes, dried shrimp or a dedicated isopod protein supplement regularly, as protein deficiency can trigger cannibalism of moulting animals.
- Calcium: cuttlebone or limestone, always available, for healthy moults.
Breeding
Porcellio are prolific. Give a small starter group good food (especially protein and calcium), a humidity gradient and stable warmth, and a colony will establish quickly. Species such as P. laevis are famously fast breeders and make excellent feeders and clean-up crews. A group of 5–10 is plenty to start.
